Adelanto was incorporated in 1970, which is located on Highway 395 in the
California Mojave Desert next to the Old George Airforce Base now known as the SCLA Airport. The
Spanish translation for Adelanto is "I advance, I improve, or I go ahead".
In 1915 a inventor E.H. Richardson founded Adelanto. He built the community with
money received from the sale of his patent that was used to develope the Hotpoint Electric
Iron. Richardson had dreamed of growing an orchard oasis in Adelanto. These orchards were famous
throughout the state for fresh fruit and cider. The depression was the end of the Adelanto orchards
and they were replaced by poultry ranching.
Today, Adelanto offers new residents affordable homes with the experience
of all seasons, from winter snow to warm summer sun. Because of cool winds from the southwest,
the area is nearly a smog free environment. Next to City Hall is Richardson Park, a 17-acre
recreational facility. This facility provides residents with tennis and basketball courts,
a soccer field, baseball diamonds and children's play areas.
